The most common problems are the asymmetry of the nasal bones, the curvature of the bridge of the nose, or the hypertrophy of the cartilaginous part of the nostrils.

During our consultations, we diagnose these facial characteristics. When the need arises we correct the facial skeletal deformities before we perform Rhinoplasties. Without a good foundation, we cannot have a good superstructure.

Surgery
The surgery is performed either in local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. At the beginning of the surgery, we apply vaso-constrictive packing to decrease the bleeding of the surgical field in this highly visualised area. The incisions are performed on the inside of the nostrils but on rare occasions, it has to extend to the skin separating the two nostrils, (open rhinoplasty). According to the surgical plan, we remodel the bony and cartilaginous support structure of the nose either with removal of the excess supporting tissue, or with trans- positioning them. The incisions are usually closed with re-absorbing sutures. We may place packing in the nostrils and splint to the outside of the nose to assure healing in the proper place.

Post-Operative Treatment
Packing, if it was used, is usually removed on the second day; the splint is removed in one week. During this time, blowing of the nose is not advisable.

Potential Complications
The surgery means reposition of the highly vascularised tissues of the nose which always results in bruising (haematoma) around the lower eyelids. It may look alarming but it dissolves and disappears within two weeks in every case. Slow seeping bleeding from the nostrils is not uncommon but serious bleeding hardly ever develops. Infection of the wound is almost unheard because of the exceptional blood supply to the area.

Frequently asked questions
Can the deviation of the septum be corrected at the time of rhynoplasty? Yes, depending on the degree of pathology and the qualification of the surgeon.

Would the reduction of the nose cause difficulty of breathing? Correctly performed rhynoplasties do not influence the airflow of the nose, although overly aggressive reduction of nasal cartilages may cause significant depression of the nostrils.

Would the sense of smell change after rhynoplasty? The mucous membrane of the nose is responsible for smell and is outside of the surgical area. The post surgical oedema and the crust formation inside the nose may cause temporary impairment but the normal sensation of smell returns spontaneously.

Preparation
It is advisable that smokers refrain from smoking at least 8 weeks before the operation. This is to reduce the risk of complications, such as wound infections or slow healing.

The surgeon will need to know details of your current/past health, of any allergies you may have, medicines you are taking and previous surgery or hospital treatment.
