The goal of aesthetic otoplasty is to correct the congenital deformities of the ear. The procedure consists of the removal of the cartilage of the ear to decrease the size of the earlobe or to change the curvature to re-establish the natural arches of the ear.

The procedure is performed in local anaesthesia. We inject the aesthetic near the earlobe.

The incision is made in the hidden back aspect of the earlobe although on rare occasions we have to make incisions on the front surface also. After the necessary amount of cartilage is removed, the wound is closed and the sutures are removed one week postoperatively.

After surgery, we place compression dressing to support the earlobe in the corrected position. The dressing stays in place for a week and subsequently an elastic band may be used.

Complications
It is very rare to see complications in conjunction with otoplasty.

Slow bleeding on the day of surgery is not uncommon. In case of significant bleeding visible on the dressing, the patient should call the surgeon.

The skin on the anterior surface of the ear usually becomes wrinkled since the cartilage supporting this area is removed. Due to the normal elasticity of the skin, the wrinkles disappear within several weeks.

Preparation
It is advisable that smokers refrain from smoking at least 8 weeks before the operation. This is to reduce the risk of complications, such as wound infections or slow healing.

The surgeon will need to know details of your current/past health, of any allergies you may have, medicines you are taking and previous surgery or hospital treatment.
