The aim of the liposuction is to correct the contour deformities of the body with removal of the excess fat, so primarily not the weight loss.
The type of the anaesthesia may be local or in case of multiple areas general anaesthesia. The choice depends mainly on the areas to be treated, and the patients preference.
During the surgery a small (3 mm thick) cannula is introduced under the skin through a small incision and with a vacuum tube connected to this cannula the excess fat is removed. There are different types of cannula. The surgeon may use the energy of ultrasound to help dissolving the fat. In case of pneumatic assisted liposuction a vibrating cannula proves the precise treatment. The length of the procedure depends on the amount and quality of the adipose tissue, generally around 1-2 hours. The incisions are then closed with sutures. These are removed on the 7th postoperative day.
After the surgery an elasticated garment is put on, which pushes back the loose skin and decreases the possibility of the haematoma formation. This should be worn at least one week after surgery continuously, day and night. (it could be removed during bathing)
The complications are rare they are less than one percent. The most frequent is the haematoma (blood accumulation at the operative site), seroma (that means liquid collection under the skin), and infection.
The main advantage of the procedure is that the removed fat cells will not reappear later, and during weight gain fat will distributed evenly on the body surface.
Preparation
It is advisable that smokers refrain from smoking at least 8 weeks before the operation. This is to reduce the risk of complications, such as wound infections or slow healing.
The surgeon will need to know details of your current/past health, of any allergies you may have, medicines you are taking and previous surgery or hospital treatment.
