The face and neck lifting solves the problems related to ageing symptoms. The procedure can be combined with operations performed on the eyelids. The goal of the surgery is the removal of wrinkles or substantial reduction of the wrinkles around the eyes, the neck and on the face. The cause of wrinkles is due to the mimic muscles that vary with each individual. Therefore it is not possible to remove the following with surgery: permanent perpendicular wrinkles on the upper and lower lips, and forehead wrinkles. The facelift procedure cannot stop the aging process, but, can “set back the clock”. Because the procedure does not “stop the clock”, it is possible that you may wish to repeat the procedure 5 – 10 years later.
The Operation
The procedure involves the removal of excess facial skin from the neck, chin and cheek areas under General Anaesthetic. The scars will be hidden behind your ears or in your hairline and will usually fade over time. After the operation you will find that your hairline has been ‘lifted’ and in the case of a man, the beard growth will be closer to, and extend back below the ear.
If the neck needs work, a small incision may also be made under the chin. In general, the surgeon separates the skin from the fat and muscle below. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour. The surgeon then tightens the underlying muscle and membrane, pulls the skin back, and removes the excess. Stitches secure the layers of tissue and metal clips may be used on the scalp.
We use pressure dressing for 24 hours. After the removal of the dressing, most of our patients can conduct their daily lives undisturbed since the oedema and the haematoma is either minimal or never develops. We remove the sutures in 5 to 7 days based on the healing tendency.
Preparation
It is advisable that smokers refrain from smoking at least 8 weeks before the operation. This is to reduce the risk of complications, such as wound infections or slow healing.
The surgeon will need to know details of your current/past health, of any allergies you may have, medicines you are taking and previous surgery or hospital treatment.
