Blepharoplasties are performed to eliminate signs of premature aging around the eyes. The most common problems are
„ bags” of the lower eyelids and the sagging of the skin of the upper eyelids.
Surgery
In most cases local anaesthesia is used. In order to decrease blood loss and to assist clean surgical preparation we also use vasoconstrictor medication. The incisions on the upper eyelid are made in the natural fold while on the lower eyelid they are done right below the eyelashes. In cases where excess skin is not present, the incision may also be made through the conjunctiva. The eyelids have very thin skin and therefore the scars are barely visible. Beyond the removal of excess skin, we may remove the protruding fatty tissue causing the „bags”. The wounds are closed with sutures placed under the skin.
Post Operative Treatment
The sutures are usually removed four to seven days after surgery. During this time the use of eye drops may be necessary.
Complications
Post-op complications are rare and usually limited to seeping, bleeding or haematoma formation.
Frequently asked questions
Could blepharoplasty cause impairment of vision? No, the eyeball is protected during surgery. It cannot get damaged.
Can upper and lower eyelid plasty be done simultaneously? Yes, this is the procedure of choice if indicated.
Preparation
It is advisable that smokers refrain from smoking at least 8 weeks before the operation. This is to reduce the risk of complications, such as wound infections or slow healing. The surgeon will need to know details of your current/past health, of any allergies you may have, medicines you are taking and previous surgery or hospital treatment.
